Eat Clean... All The Time?

It's a good concept, isn't it?

I would say it is. I mean, it promotes eating whole, healthy, nutritious foods that are good for your body. It promotes a healthy attitude towards life and even working out. But sometimes I feel I can take it a little too far.

I never really recognized this at first. I am 'bulking' or simply just trying to put more mass on this body of mine. I want the muscle so bad so that one day I can achieve my dreams of stepping across numerous stages in figure competitions and be a fitness role model. I mentioned before that I am doing it the 'clean' way, eating more healthy foods to put on the weight rather than stuffing my face with Ho-Hos and Twinkies.

Well now, I'm not giving my eating habits a label.

...true. (Source)

I feel like the concept of eating clean is amazing. It sends a good message. But for some of us (not ALL), I think we tend to take it too far. We become so enamored in this whole process of "eating clean" that when we do in fact attack a Ho-Ho or Twinkie, it's as if we have committed a crime. Oh how dare we eat something so NOT clean?!

This is NOT what the whole concept of eating clean entails, and I know that. It's not MEANT for us to become obsessive. It's meant for us to use it as affirmation that we are fueling our bodies correctly for the rest of our lives.

I've learned so much from some awesome bloggers, Sable and Tara. These ladies are so knowledgable about their areas of study in the fitness world, and I can't help but admire that. Sable has mentioned on her Facebook group page that after two years of bulking, she didn't have as much muscle as she thought, hence why bulking can be so necessary. Tara posted a post that shows some of her weekly cheats, and YES that is plural, because she has more than one. Also, I admire Naomi for reminding her clients that one shouldn't ask "Is so and so bad to eat?" because nothing is 'BAD' to eat. Just eat it if the craving is that bad and MOVE ON!

I LOVE how these ladies just roll with reality. The reality is, you don't have to eat clean all.the.time like so many people seem to think. Okay, so you want a treat, you've been exercising all week and have stuck do your diet, and now your friends want you to go out with them for a pizza. Do you say no and freak out because pizza is not 'clean'?

I love Giordano's deep dish pizza. I get sick every time I eat it, but it's so worth it. :) (Source)

I used to only have one 'cheat meal' during the week. But in the past few weeks I have changed my habits as I think the 'eating clean' had made me too obsessive. Now, I eat eat carbs at night (OMG no way!) and I will have little treats in the middle of the week and up to three 'cheat meals' during the week. I don't like that term. Let's just call them meals, because quite frankly, whether it is a cupcake or a carrot, both are food, so I am not going to overanalyze it by being all "Well carrots are clean and cupcakes aren't..."

And by doing this, you would've NEVER guessed... I've become more fuller, I can see more muscle definition (shocker!!!!) and I can see myself getting bigger (in a GOOD way). So, ladies (and gents), if you're trying to put on some mass stop telling yourself that you can only doing it by eating clean. It's really hard to gain mass when you're eating a bunch of vegetables, because let's face it, veggies are so low-calorie that they won't get you to where you want (or need to, in my case) to be. I'm not saying cut veggies out completely. I eat veggies everyday! But take a step back and realize you need the proper CARBS and FATS to attain the muscle. Just do it. It's easier said than done, I completely understand. But if you don't make an effort, you will stay the exact same way. Do you WANT to change? Do you WANT to see the muscle? Then suck it up and EAT, and eat more than just protein and vegetables, I beg of you.

I admire those who can eat clean and still enjoy their treats. If you're 100% dedicated to eating clean but are not obsessed, then that is completely and utterly fine. More power to you! But for those that take it a step ahead, you simply don't need to 'eat clean' for every food that touches your lips. For the most part, sure. A majority of the meals I consume ARE healthy. But I am not going to beat myself up for eating a greasy, fatty burger every now and then as I am simply taking advantage of the moment and enjoying myself. And I'm not going to convince myself that I "need this cheat meal" because it "revs up my metabolism." Sure that may be true, but for the most part I think this is just an attempt to justify why one is not eating a 'clean' meal. No. Just be realistic and say "I'm eating this because I'm hungry." Why justify it? :)

I am fully admitting that I became too obsessive. And I don't want to have a bad relationship with food, so I stopped preaching eating clean. I think it's best for me and I am preventing myself from going down a dark path.

Questions: Do you find that your eating habits are obsessively controlled by the concept of 'eating clean'? Do you agree or disagree with me? Share your thoughts, good or bad! I don't moderate comments so if you truly disagree, shoot me a line!

***DISCLAIMER: I am NOT suggesting that people eat whatever they want in whatever amounts. I am simply saying that eating something not 'clean' every now and then will not make the world implode. Thank you.***

  1. Yes. Yes. And love your 'roll with reality' phrasing too.
When I wass a trainer I saw lots of women eat too too strictly clean for too too long and plateau because of it.

    1. I am trying. :) I like the idea of clean eating but I feel like I have a tendency to be too precise and perfect (or try to be) with everything I do, and I tried to be too perfect with clean eating!

  2. Great realization, Brittany and a great reminder to all. "Clean Eating" used to sound so intimidating and so restrictive to me. I think it's important that we all realize that we're allowed to define our own diet definitions. Because everyone is different, we all MUST approach diets individually. We have to do what works for us and personalize it. I like the idea of Clean Eating, but I had to develop my own approach and my own guidelines to it. I can't follow someone else's rules or I obsess over them and feel guilty if I mess up. Do what works for you and your body! Great reminder.

    1. Thank you! I agree. I tried to follow the "clean eating" rules on point because that is the perfectionist in me. But I love that you created your OWN rules... that is exactly what I need to do. :)

  3. I have a tendency to think in terms of all or nothing if I'm not careful. If I can't do it 100% of the time then why do it. Not a conducive mindset to progress and success. When I started clean eating last year it became obsessive an then again when I switched to a vegan diet this year. I occasionally still expect the world to implode if I eat anything non-vegan but for the most part I'm much less controlled. Great post!

    1. I am definitely an all or nothing kind of person, and it does not work to my advantage! I am so happy that you allow yourself to have some wiggle room. No one is perfect. :) And thank you!

  4. I feel you on this one. I hate the idea of cheat meals or indulges. Eating clean for me is having the things I want during the day. it may not be perfect but if it fuels me it is what I need. it is all about finding what works for your body. I have learned through people i love that when you are happy with yourself, food won't be something you need to think about all the time.

    1. Thank you! I hate the idea of it too. Apparently, "clean eating" means eating 6 meals a day spaced three hours apart and there are unfortunately no Pop Tarts included with this. *sadface* But I am going to make my own definition of what it means to eat clean, like you. Thank you for the awesome comment. :)

    2. I love your reply because a life without the occasional PopTart is just not worth living in my book haha.

  7. I love this! Wait until you see my post later today...it's a whole week of cheats! Haha ;)

I think it's so unhealthy for your mind AND body to 'eat clean' all the time. It just screams of excessive restriction to me. Most people could benefit from eating a few more deep pan pizzas! I love that you are already on top of this at such a young age <3

    1. Oh gosh I can't wait! It's always nice to see the healthy eats that people come up with, but let's be honest... sometimes we want to see some treats!!!

And I agree. At first I took the concept lightly but I noticed it was becoming too serious. I hate restriction. I like being open and balancing things out! I need to eat a whole pizza myself. It's not going to kill me. :) Thank you Tara! <3

  8. I saw you post this on the Squat Like a Lady Facebook page, and had to click. Wonderfully astute observations...at such a young age! I know that makes me sound like an old lady, but really. I am incredibly impressed that you had this realisation, and it's something I wish I would have realised much earlier in life. I spent my teens and most of my 20s being extremely hard on myself, even after I recovered from an ED. It had the opposite effect, and actually prevented me from putting on muscle, in spite of the fact that I had been consistently lifting weights since my early teens! So if you realise this now...trust me, you will get closer to your goals. You won't get the muscle you want without being more flexible with your diet!

    1. Thank you so much! It makes me happy to read comments such as these. :) When I was consistently eating 'clean' meal after 'clean' meal I was NOT putting on the muscle that I need to put on. I needed to stimulate more growth so not eating 'clean' for once really helped me do so. Now I have been gaining muscle so much faster! If anything, when I started trying to put on muscle by eating super clean, I actually LOST weight. That was clearly not the goal! Thank you for your awesome feedback. :)

  9. I don't want to repeat exactly what all of the above comments have said - however, I can't HELP but say something here. Your truth telling is quite remarkable - just saying it like it is for you, right now. But what struck me most of all was your understanding of the grey area that is where life really happens. Black and white/right and wrong can feel so easy. Yet grey and managing a balance is a constant goal and struggle for so many of us.
You strike me as such as old soul - in a vibrant, exuberant young body.

  12. Loved this post Brittany!! I totally believe in balance! Not just with food but this applies to life in general. Being extreme or obsessive with anything is never a good thing. You'll never be satisfied. I have been working on a similar post for a while because I get a lot of people asking me what I eat,how I diet and for food suggestions. Gonna post it on Monday :)

  13. I love this post! It really hits close to home, because for me when I try to 'eat clean', it becomes restrictive to the point where even foods that would be considered a clean food, are forbidden simply because in an ED mind, fat is fat and carbs are carbs. I still struggle with it, but I've been allowing myself to ease up, and finding that not only do I feel better eating balanced, but actually by eating some foods on occasion that are less nutritious (i.e. a cupcake), it frees up my mind! eating clean all the time makes you notice the 'unclean' foods more, then the cupcake doesn't even taste good! But incorporating those foods back into your diet means that it becomes less of a big deal, a food you can actually enjoy.

    1. I LOVED THIS!!!!! This speaks to me as well! Clean eating to me makes me feel like I'm a bad person when I even dare think about eating an 'unclean' food. So true. Thanks for this awesome comment. :)
