Hello Marvelous Monday...
I have two things to share today! First, as per usual, is my opinion on something which I am sure you are all bouncing out of your seats to hear. Second, I have a marvelous recipe to enlighten everybody with so keep on readin'.
I wanted to point out that some people are clearly oblivious at the gym as to what they are doing. Obviously. But sometimes the things people do are so ridiculous to me. And the worst part is, if anybody dare tries to help this person do something the correct way, then they feel like they are being picked on.
No.
I can say for myself at least that I used to get really sensitive when someone corrected my form and told me I was doing an exercise completely wrong. But now I know better, as I am sure that the person advising me is simply trying to help me, not hurt me. I'd probably end up hurting myself if I didn't heed the advice anyways!
I saw a few questionable things yesterday and there is just the one person who I always see doing who knows what and yet he doesn't listen to the other experienced gym-goers and continues to lift incorrectly.
This is what I see: an emphasis on the utilization of the Smith machine and a lack of a range of motion.
I often see people doing bench press or shoulder press on the Smith machine. I'm not going to tell them they shouldn't do it, you should do what works for you, but I will say that one will probably get more bang for their buck by using the Olympic bar, barbells and dumbbells. One particular guy I saw was 'bench pressing.' He stacked the 45's on the thing and, being a very small guy, was about to lay down on the bench and press it out. Well, he unhooked the Smith machine bar and moved the bar maybe a half an inch to his chest and back up. He barely moved it towards his chest, A.K.A. the goal of the bench press. He then repeated this for a few reps. Huh?
Also, I always see a guy doing exercises like tricep pulldowns, lat pulldowns, high rows, etc. with an incredible amount of weight that even the huge guys can't lift and barely getting in a full range of motion. He moves it maybe two inches and he is done. What? You're not working your muscles and all by doing that. If it's too heavy, MOVE THE WEIGHT DOWN! Using a lighter weight and getting the necessary range of motion to properly hit a muscle will always trump going as heavy as physically possible and moving the weight maybe two inches.
It makes me cringe seeing this. And I probably sound too big for my britches here. I mean, I'm only a 16-year-old girl, what do I know about lifting? Well, I know enough by now to know how to do an exercise properly, if that answers the question. I'm not trying to preach! I'm just putting in my two cents, and I am willing to guarantee that some people reading this will agree with me.
Lifting properly with good form > letting your ego tell you to lift heavy and getting hurt.
I'm afraid of the day that my weight room turns into snap city due to some atrocious form. I don't want to hear any bones snapping!
Anyways, rant over, and onto the recipe...
Peanut-ty Protein French Toast
Ingredients:
- 2 slices of P28 bread- 1-2 eggs or 3-4 egg whites
- 2 tbsp. peanut flour
- 2 tbsp. milk + 2 additional tbsp. milk
- maple syrup or sugar-free syrup
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice
Directions:
Spray a pan with non-stick cooking spray and heat it on low-medium heat. In a flat bowl, crack the eggs/egg whites into it and add 2 tbsp. of milk (I used almond), baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and pumpkin pie spice. Whisk the mixture up. Coat the two slices of bread in the mixture and place on the heated pan. Let each side cook for approximately 2-3 minutes. In a separate small bowl, mix together the peanut flour and other 2 tbsp. of milk. You may need to add a little bit more water to this to get the preferred consistency. Place the cooked French toast on a plate and heat up the syrup. Pour over the French toast and coat the toast with the peanut sauce. Sprinkle more cinnamon, nutmeg and pumpkin pie spice on top.
This. was. scrumptious. I cannot tell a lie. Give it a try! (Rhyme time!)
Have a marvelous Monday friends. Let me know if you try the recipe!
Questions: Do you see people barely moving a weight in the gym? What bothers you in the gym? Do you ever let your ego get to you? Have you ever made 'health-ified' French toast?
Yes maam. Healthified French toast this morning!!!
ReplyDeleteYUMMY! :)
DeleteGood heavens I need to make that protein french toast-- I got a loaf of Ezekiel breadjust waiting to be transformed mwahaha :D
ReplyDeleteI also love this: "Lifting properly with good form > letting your ego tell you to lift heavy and getting hurt." SO TRUE. I wish more people realized this. You're beyond your years in wisdom my friend :)
Hope your Monday rocks!!!!
Dude you will fall in love, I promise you! And thank you :) I'd rather lift with good form and feel the response in my muscle that twisting it in some weird fashion to get the weight up/down, you know? I hope yours does too! <3
DeleteYou had me at French Toast! I have GOT to try that PB2 Bread!
ReplyDeleteYES YES YES DO IT :)
DeleteWHAT WHAT. That French Toast looks beyond delicious. I'll have to make it on Saturday when I have a freer morning. YUM!
ReplyDeleteI hope you like it! Let me know!
DeleteI seriously hate when ppl lift way too much for their abilities. I also hate when women grab 3-5 lb weights and don't even try. I think finding a balance is key. For me, it was hard to figure out what weight to start with when I did the LiveFit workout, but once I figured it out, I was good to go.
ReplyDeleteMe too! And about the women, I TOTALLY agree. Their purse probably weighs more than that, you know? Thanks for the feedback :)
DeleteHealthified Pancakes I love :)
ReplyDeletePB, totally craving that right now!
Proper form is so important when training.
I love my PB :) And yes, I always try to maintain proper form.
DeleteI think I would be that person... probably why I avoid it. I have no idea how to lift properly for sure.
ReplyDeleteStart 'light,' but by that, I don't mean curling 5 lbs. as I'm sure you could do more than that. Go heavy enough that you're challenged, but not heavy enough that you'll snap your arm in two haha.
DeleteWOW came across your blog via Katie's amazing blog! And you write so well too... I love this... gosh why have I not found all of you sooner... Love the positive-ness and wow I am actually lost for words... doesn't usually happen haha... I can ramble and ramble! Haha about the gym, I actually don't go regularly, but when I have gone I have seen the same thing, and think 'why'... :-/ Anyway, hope you don't mind me following you! Auds :-)
ReplyDeleteAww you totally just flattered me! Thank you! I love finding new blogs, as I have just found yours. :) I absolutely don't mind! Thank you so much! :)
DeleteIt really bugs me people would rather load up machines and use horrific form to "lift" the weight versus going lighter and using proper form - I don't get it!
ReplyDeleteT.
Haha yeah I guess they want deformed muscles! Not you and I though. I don't get it either!
DeletePoor lifting form always makes me cringe! But at least they're working out I guess! I love this recipe! I'm so jealous P28 bread contains gluten because I'm dying to try it!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point. They are TRYING which is excellent. But I want to see them succeed, not injure themselves, you know? And I know, a lot of people are bummed about the wheat in P28, but there are some really yummy gluten free breads out there! Ezekiel does have a g-free bread as well as Udi's. :)
DeleteThat french toast is ALL you... LOL. Looks way to messy for me.
ReplyDeleteGreat tip on checking your ego. Always important to have the right form.
Haha sorry! And definitely.
DeleteIt's definitely a good point to make. Full range of motion will get anyone bigger and stronger than half a rep too heavy to produce safe form. I feel like squating on the smith machine is the best way to ruin your whole spine. If you can air squat you don't need the smith machine...right? Who knows. I want to smash my face into your french toast. Okay not really, but you know what I mean. :)
ReplyDeleteFor sure. I love my free weights! And that's definitely true! Lol--I love how blatant you are Sara. :) Thank you <3
DeleteMmmm.. That French Toast looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteLove this post so much. Yeah, in the past I've definitely let my ego take a hold of me and make me feel like I needed to lift as heavy as possible (and with horrible form!) to see results. I've learned from working with my body for a while, though, that my body feels the movements more if I use a lower weight. Not to mention the fact that my movements are also more controlled and it doesn't feel impossible to carry out all the reps. For someone who's just starting (a year's experience) and learning lifting techniques, I should probably still stick with and remember the tip, "Pick a weight that you should be comfortable doing 6-8 reps with." Key word, COMFORTABLE!
Lots of rambling, but I'm trying to untangle the thoughts in my brain. Book report = too much jumbled thinking, and I'm trying to relax by reading my favorite blogs.. AHEM. ;)
Haha thanks!
DeleteYeah it's definitely important to feel the muscle you are trying to work! For example, if you're doing a dumbbell row, you should be feeling it in your back, not your shoulders or biceps! I have to disagree with the 6-8 rep range. That's actually considered relatively heavy and I think for a beginner, anywhere between 10 and 15 is a good starting point. But you are so wise! Comfort is definitely key, as long as you're not TOO comfortable to challenge yourself. ;)
And aww, you flatter me. :D
When I see poor lifting form or people lifting too light of weights, I am talking 1 or 2 pounders, I do cringe! I know they are trying and that is fantastic, but I know they can be even better, get more out of what they are doing, if they get the correct weight, challenge themselves more and such. I would never say anything though because I am not a fan when people saying something to me! Unless I am doing something terribly wrong that is...
ReplyDeleteOn a different note, that recipe looks delish m'dear!
Haha I know! You're right--they ARE trying which should be considered but these people need to face the challenge, you know? And yes, I hate when I am corrected and it takes a lot to swallow my ego LOL but in the end it works for my benefit. :) And thank you!
DeleteEh I can't help but cringe when I see people lifting weights poorly. I just want nothing but the best for them & for them to get the proper workout they deserve.. I don't think anything is wrong w/ that?? :)
ReplyDeleteOh my, that french toast recipe sounds & looks mighty tasty!!
Right?! Sometimes I just want to rewrite everyone's 'workout plan' but it's not in my jurisdiction to do so unfortunately. ;)
DeleteAnd thank you! :)
i have made that EXACT thing(; hahah did you know p28 now has flatbreads!
ReplyDeleteNo I did not!
DeleteOoo, I need to make this, yum! i love peanut anything! Will have to try. Have made french toast healthier by using lighter wheat bread or just 1 slice of better for you whole grain bread and then egg whites and cinnamon and stevia. Then I don't put syrup on, I use honey and bananas with peanut butter.
ReplyDeleteI do have the same issue when I go to the gym with my bf, I look around and think "why are you doing it that way, you're gonna hurt yourself!" But I know being the only girl in the weight room I would get the look of "what does this little girl know?" Well I know that arching your back that much while doing a bench press is going to hurt you over time. I have even seen another guy tell someone "oh arch your back more when you press, it helps." No, it's putting stress on your back because you're lifting too heavy! Just so many things are done wrong in the weight room. My bf and I watch each other and correct each others form to make sure it's done right and if I can't lift something, I drop the weight.
Honey and bananas are much better then regular syrup! Great idea :D
DeleteI love that you actually know what's up in the weight room! I definitely agree--arching your back to support any weight does NOT make you 'stronger,' it just makes you stupider to be putting your body under such stress! It's definitely not worth it. I'd rather get proper form and have a functional body--not a back brace!! It's great that you and your boyfriend are supporters of each other. :) Thanks for the feedback!
Hello! I've been reading your blog for a while now and finally got the bravery to go ahead and give you a shout out from Lubbock Tx! Just wanted to mention keep up the great job!
