If There's A Will, There's A Way!

Happy Thursday!

For some reason, I've always liked Thursdays. Perhaps it is because it is one more day until Friday. But otherwise, I don't really know why I like them! They're just cool, I suppose. ;)

I wanted to write a post about willpower and how I personally am able to stick to my goals when many around me don't understand why I do what I do. I've been going back and forth trying to write a post like this, but Liz mentioned the topic so I decided that it was about time I get on that!

I used to have no willpower whatsoever. Like none. I'd tell myself that I would do something, then I would give up because it wasn't satisfying. However, that has drastically changed. One thing that I now have going for me is willpower. I can firmly stick my foot down and say NO. I can keep going even though people question my motives and sometimes I stumble, but I get right back up again.

This is why I think I am destined to compete one day, as I have the willpower of pure steel!

I love my brother with all of my heart. But, let's think about this. He's a teenage boy with a metabolism as fast as the speed of light. I could look in my pantry and fridge right now and pick out French toast, pizza, cheesy garlic bread, tortilla chips, etc. Most people promoting eating a clean diet will tell you NOT to keep that food in the house, however, I have it all around me because I can't tell my brother to get rid of his food.

What's my alternative? That's right: willpower.

Every time I open the fridge or look in the pantry I can instantly look past the junk food and reach for my clean foods. Instead of that French toast, I have my Ezekiel bread. Instead of that pizza, I have whole wheat pitas. Instead of tortilla chips, I reach for my whole grain brown rice cakes.

I am by no means saying I NEVER eat that 'junk' food. (I love me some Oreos and Pop Tarts) As I am trying to put on more weight, I don't take the easy way out and stuff myself with crap food. I do it by stuffing myself with clean foods so that I am getting an array of healthy vitamins and minerals that support my goals and make my body healthier. And believe me, so many people point their fingers at me with this, saying "Well WHY don't you just eat really bad foods? That will definitely put the weight on. That makes no sense that you're trying to put on weight with healthy foods..." Because you CAN put on weight with healthy foods, you just need to eat MORE of them. And I want to do it the right way, not the easy way. Does that make sense now? No? Oh well, don't worry about my motives.

At school, I would bring in a huge bag of clean foods. I couldn't even use a traditional brown paper bag because I couldn't fit everything in it. I used a real plastic bag from a grocery store. One example of my lunch would be a chicken breast, a sweet potato with almond butter, a huge Tupperware container of vegetables, and an apple. Here I am, eating all of this, while I could easily go get in line for some curly fries or pizza. One person even came up to me one day and had the nerve to say: "You eat ALL of this? You sure do eat a lot..." And yes, they said this as they were shoving their face with curly fries. Its makes you wonder.

When you're trying to eat healthy or stick to your workouts, you must keep your goals at the forefront of your mind. If someone tries to bully you into eating ice cream that you just don't want, practice saying NO firmly. If someone says you're "wasting your time" lifting weights and sticking to your exercise regimen, tell them you're doing it for you and if they don't understand why, then who cares? You don't understand why they're so judgmental and ignorant but you're moving on with your life too.

It's willpower. It's the fight to keep fighting. What's that one phrase? Oh, right: if there's a WILL, there's a WAY! :)

Questions: Do you have really strong willpower as well? Has anyone questioned your healthy lifestyle? If so, how did/do you handle it?

  1. Great post! Sometimes it can get annoying having to defend your healthy lifestyle when others either bash you or try to deter you from your goals. Just gotta keep chuggin and ignoring the haters!
You're gonna make an awesome competitor one day, I just know it! Enjoy your Thursday :)

  3. WOW, this really is exactly the same as me. I am going through a bulking stage. Long story behind it but I got to a seriously low weight, gained a bit back but stayed the same for years. I too started lifting weights thinking I could build muscle with the same small amount of clean food I was eating.
My first trainer wanted me to eat unhealthy foods to get the weight on - I am a pt myself and know alot about nutrition.I wanted to do it the harder way and build my body with healthy nutritious foods like you. So it may be that we have to eat even more food but, hey, its pretty awsome!!
I now have a trainer who understands me and feels the same in terms of building the body. I wont lie its had to eat the amount of cals I do day in day out as i am a hard gainer but I am finally progressing and only been with him 6 wks.
Keep going!! I dont see how ppl have to keep 'unhealthy' foods out of the house, I choose to eat clean even with a fridge full of my fams foods.
I like to say 'I have been weak before, becoming strong made me a fighter'
Sorry for the long comment :S x

    1. Do not at all be sorry for this wonderful comment. :) It's great to know that you are now a PT. Yes, I had people shove down my throat that I needed to eat crap food to put weight on successfully. It's just simply not true! And I agree. We may have to eat a bit *more* but it's WORTH it to be healthy in the end! :) I am so glad you now have found a trainer who gets what you do--that's fantastic. I eat a TON of calories in a day as well, and I won't go into numbers, but it's way more than anyone can probably comprehend, lol! So nice to know someone is on the same boat as me. Thank you for the encouragement. :) You and are both fighters, I love that :)

    2. Yea, I didnt post numbers because everyone is individual but like you, I eat a tonne. The men I work with get very jealous as I basically force feed myself some days. But it's all for a good cause.
Definately fighters!! And in it for the long haul. My biggest challenge for the future is to do an 8hour crossfit endurance challenge for charity and will need big old muscles for that!! :)

    3. I'm with ya! I really want to do an endurance challenge :)

  4. Great post Brittany!! Of course, you're bulking, so now is the time to indulge your cravings - French toast instead of Ezekiel bread every once in a while won't hurt ya! =)

I am definitely going through a similar situation - Max weighs 200lb and has a ton of muscle so he can eat toaster strudels, cereal, pizza etc and still look awesome, but I can't. Especially while I'm contest prepping! It takes every ounce of willpower I have to not join him in demolishing some brownies or whatever.

    1. True, true, but I make my own high calorie French toast with my Ezekiel bread. ;) I know, I am so innovative, right? ;)

You clearly have willpower! You are doing a great job and I cannot WAIT until you hit that stage! :)

  5. I really needed to read this today. it is not that I don't want to eat junk but the mindset behind it is always negative and emotional. I want to eat it because in the moment i want it not eating it because I feel stressed, anxious or emotional charged. comparing is a tough one to get sucked into.

  6. Great post! I personally find that the longer you live the healthy lifestyle - the easier it becomes.
I personally am never tempted to eat junk food - if you would have told me that a couple of years ago i would have never believed it!

Though i absolutely love food, the more serious i get about fitness - the more i do see it as fuel.
And stuffing my face with crappy food does not fuel my workouts!

Doesn't mean i eat crazy good foods though!

    1. I agree 100%! It does become more like a LIFESTYLE after awhile, not a one week trial where you go back to crap eating next week. I am not either--junk food just doesn't appeal to me anymore! I see it as fuel for sure, but I also think it's okay every once in awhile to just have what you want and not feel guilty! I never deprive, I just eat in moderation :)

  7. Great post. You and I are kinda at the same stage. I have a hard time keeping my weight on and have to eat a ton. But I understand as well the importance of clean eating to put on the "right kind of weight" However I am a huge believer in balance if you are not competing. Eating junk food sometimes is not gonna hurt you as long as you have the will power not to go overboard and make it an everyday habit.

    1. I agree with you. I do not eat clean all of the time, lol! I eat what I want frequently throughout the week, just in moderation and I ALWAYS have to get me ice cream or a big skillet at my favorite restaurant. :) I am definitely NOT competing and don't want it to seem as if I am obsessed!
