First Time Doing CrossFit

It's Wednesday, A.K.A. hump day, A.K.A. two more days until the weekend, and even better... my BIRTHDAY!

I MUST share what I did last Saturday. I usually do leg workouts on Saturday, and I don't train with Mary (my trainer) on the weekends so I am usually on my own. Lately, I have not been feeling energized to work on my legs. They are my lagging body part and I am so hard on myself when I don't feel like I am getting in what I consider a 'good' workout. I am tall and my legs are so skinny; I literally cannot look at myself in the mirror when I walk by in shorts because it makes me sad. I am working on getting better with this, as I know they eventually will grow, but I am so impatient.

Legs used to be my favorite body part to work, but now they have started to become somewhat of a drag, so on Saturday I decided I was going to leave the legs to be destroyed by Mary and do something else. I wasn't really feeling doing a typical lifting workout nor did I feel like doing cardio (do I ever?) so I was racking my brain on what to do. I didn't want to do yoga or pilates. But wait, I've been dying to do CrossFit. My gym doesn't offer classes so I took the bull by the horns and researched a few "WODs" until I found one that looked appealing. What is appealing to me? One that doesn't require me to do a 100 Pull-Ups but will still challenge me. Yeah, it took me awhile to find one hehe! But I did.

Here is what I did:

15 Box Jumps
15 Burpees
10 Kettlebell Snatches (each arm)
15 Weighted Sit-Ups
*repeat 5 times for time

What a rush! It looked pretty simple but let me tell you, looks can be so deceiving! It was very tough! I used a medicine ball for the sit-ups and I also used the second highest box for the box jumps. The kettlebell was a smaller one as I have never done snatches before, so I started out slowly. The burpees nearly killed me not to mention the fact that I chomped down on my lip super hard and blood was present! But it was SO WORTH IT.

If you have never tried any type of CrossFit workout, I highly recommend that you venture out of your comfort zone and give it a try! I am definitely going back for more, that's for sure!

I also did a glute workout that look something like this:

15 Reverse Hyperextensions on Bench (hold the last rep for 5 seconds)
15 Weighted Glute Bridges
15 Weighted Hip Extensions
*repeat 3 times

I used a 25 lb. plate for the bridges and I put a 5 lb. dumbbell behind my legs for the hip extensions. Give it a try and hear your booty scream!

PROOF!

Have a great Wednesday :)

Question: Have you ever tried CrossFit? If so, what do you like the most about it? What do you like the least? If you haven't, would you like to? And finally, do you like working the glutes?

  4. So fun! I definitely plan on trying CrossFit someday. Endurance is not my strong point so it's going to kick my booty, which means I need it ;)

    1. I totally recommend it (so far) haha! Wait until one WOD calls for like 300 pull-ups. That will be the day that I tell everyone to save themselves. :) Endurance isn't my strongpoint either! Because us lifting girls love our weights ;)

  5. I love that with CF, you can get an amazing workout in just a short amount of time! I was one of those people who once looked at a WOD and said, "That sounds too easy." 15 minutes later, huffing and puffing, I was prepared to admit just how wrong I was. Try this one when you have a few minutes: 1 squat, 1 burpee (first minute), 2 squats, 2 burpees (second minute) and continue to add one each minute until you can no longer complete the exercises within the allotted minute. Sounds easy, right?!

    1. Omg I totally agree. I looked at that workout and said "HA I got this." 5 minutes later I was begging for the end! Thanks for the workout! I have written it down and plan to tackle it on Saturday. :) SOUNDS easy but the word 'burpee' is a clear warning hehe!

    1. I think hardcore CrossFitters are super FIT for a reason. It looks easy but they have the rock hard bodies to prove otherwise! It gives you such a rush! :)

  8. That workout looks awesome! I've been needing a good workout to kick my butt, because I'm sort of in a rut, and that one looks perfect for me! :D I have no idea how to do snatches, though, so I'll probably have to look that up!

As for that part where you said that you really want your legs to grow.. I know I said I don't want to be skinny, but I'm kind of insecure of my legs because I personally feel like I've got too many muscles in them! My calves are too buff for my taste, but they've always been that way because I used to be a dancer. I guess it's true what they say-- the grass is always greener on the other side. I'd probably prefer having your legs than mine right now.

    1. Oh it's fun! Especially the box jumps. The burpees? Not so much. :) Definitely try the snatches!

I completely agree with you. I wish I had YOUR legs! It's kind of like girls with straight hair wanting curly hair, and girls with curly hair wanting straight hair. There's perks to both!

  10. I love crossfit. I was anorexic and bulimic for about 12 years. I was in and out of treatment. I was also a compulsive exerciser. In recovery I completley quit exercising. I told myself I would start doing it again when I could find something I loved. I also suffered from the belief that cardio was the only proper way to exercise. I started doing crossfit at a crossfit gym last April and I have not looked back for one second. My body has changed and developed in ways that I have never thought possible. I am able to throw huge amounts of weight over my head. Do pullups, flip tires, climb ropes and so on. My body looks so different then what I would have thought acceptable for so many years. But I love it. This is how I want it to look. I am so confident in myself. I am proud of what I am. I am proud of the woman I have become in crossfit. I love the sense of comrodarie that develops with all the other athletes that you sweat and bleed beside every day. Young and old they are all my friends. A new life started for me when I walked through the doors of my crossfit gym I owe so much of my recovery to crossfit and I have never felt so comfortable in any place. I recommend it to any women.
